What To Do If A Window Breaks During A Hurricane

Posted on: 1 October 2015

If you live in an area in which a hurricane might be a threat to you, your family and your home, it's important to be as prepared as possible. Along with stocking up on non-perishables and creating a safe place for your family to ride out the storm, you also have to be prepared for things that might happen during a storm.

For example, when the winds are high and are blowing things around, there is always the chance that one of the windows in your home could break. This can leave you wondering what to do so that you can protect yourself and your family without allowing your property to be damaged more than necessary. These are a few steps that you can take in this situation.

Move Your Family to Another Room

A broken window can be very dangerous during a hurricane for a number of reasons. The glass could be blown around the house and could cause injury to you and your loved ones. You also have to worry about debris flying through your window or even potential flooding. This is why it is best to evacuate the rest of your family to another room. If possible, move them to a room that has no windows. Shut the door to the room in which there is a broken window.

Make a Quick Fix

If the winds have died down enough for you to do so -- such as when the "eye" of the storm is passing over and creates a short lull -- then consider making a quick fix for the window. For example, you could nail or staple a large, flat piece of cardboard over the window opening. This might not work in the long-term but can help cover up the area and prevent debris from flying into the house. Be careful about the glass to ensure that you don't get cut, and leave the window alone and evacuate to another part of the home yourself if the winds pick back up.

Wait Until After the Storm

It is dangerous to do too much during the storm, so try not to worry about the window too much. After the fact, you can take pictures for your insurance company, contact your insurance adjuster and call a window repair company (such as United Glass Service Inc) to come out and make the repair.

Hurricanes are scary enough, and they can be even more frightening if a window breaks during the storm. Being careful and getting your family away from this dangerous situation should be your first priority; then, you can take the necessary steps to try to repair your window.
