A Few Things To Consider When Your Windshield Is Damaged

Posted on: 14 April 2017

Depending on where you live, having a chip or crack in the windshield of your car can lead to a traffic citation. If you are in an accident, you may be found to be at fault because the flaw made it hard for you to see what was going on in front of you. It is important that you take care of even a small chip or crack in the windshield as soon as possible after it occurs. When calling around for quotes, be sure to keep these items in mind.

Repair Technician Comes to You

There are companies that will send a repair technician to wherever the vehicle is and do the repair right there. This can save you time and get the job done much quicker. For example, if the windshield was hit by a pebble on the drive into work, you can have the repair done in the parking lot at your place of employment while you are working. This means that you will not be driving the vehicle with a damaged windshield any further than absolutely necessary. In addition, you will not have to drive to the shop and wait for the repair to be completed.

Window Tints

If you have any type of tint to the windshield, make sure you tell the technician when you first call for a quote. Even though you need to provide the make, model, and year of the car, it does not mean that the tint pattern is all the same. In addition, if you would like to have an area tinted, such as the area between the two front visors, so that you can see better when the sun is shining there, you can ask to have a windshield with it instead of what you have now.

Ask About a Repair

If the chip or crack is not too big, you may be able to get away with a simple repair instead of having to have the windshield replaced. The repair technicians will be able to tell you what the legal requirements are for this. Some reasons for replacement include the size and location of the flaw.

Your insurance may cover the cost of a repair or replacement. However, you may have to pay the deductible. Contact your insurance agent to find out if you will have to pay for the work and, if so, how much your responsibility is. Let the service technician know the insurance information so he or she can charge the company appropriately. If you have to pay a portion, this is all you should pay when the job is done.
